In the crucible of the stakes, he crawls,
While elsewhere, other monsters cast their bawls,
And the air resounds with preyed-upon shrieks,
Those who succumbed to this fortnight of freaks,
Of flares in the sky, of black and blood suns,
While scattered abroad the muttering runs
