Beautiful Body

O beautiful body upon the cross,
Scored bloody by whips, and burdened with loss,
Elevated naked, dignity stripped
By those pinning nails which through your hands ripped:
Your freedom lost, free to love and to teach,
No hardened heart, it seemed, was beyond your reach;
But always there is, nay…
