The Epic Game
You’ve heard of Babe, and Tris, and Paige,
The famous Rubes: Marquard, Waddell,
Cap Anson and his brawling age,
Ray Chapman who at twilight fell.
They live forever, stories told,
Wherever baseball has its hold.
But what of them, the av’rage Joes,
Who play the game when day is done,
What schoolboy or reporter knows
The epic games they’ve lost or won?
They tried their best, as all we should,
For God created baseball good.
And as we wait to be reborn,
Let’s throw the ball around the horn.
